Italy here we come!

Italy here we come!

In a desperate attempt to be more organised I am researching what we can do in Italy. This is in no way me procrastinating over the packing that awaits me upstairs… Well maybe not too much! At least I’m being productive…

Rome

First stop is Rome. We have 1 full day in Rome as we arrive late on Thursday and leave for Sorrento on Saturday.

To maximise time, we have booked a tour of the city for the morning…. in a golf cart! The Things love golf carts so this should be a huge hit with them. There is so much to see in Rome and we simply couldn’t get it done in a day on our own. 3 weeks in Italy will provide balance for everyone overall but the Things might revolt on day 1 if we push them too far. Hopefully this is a good compromise – super fun and saving little legs while giving us the culture fix we want! We have tickets for the Vatican in the afternoon while pizza and gelato will definitely feature in the day too… cross your fingers it all goes ok!

Sorrento

Saturdays for the 3 weeks in Italy will involve travel in a serious form: Starting with meeting Mr Wanderlust’s family at Rome airport to drive to a villa near Sorrento. We are all exhausted coming to the end of term and I am excited for the Things (and us) to hang out with family. I don’t anticipate this being a particularly tourism heavy week!

That being said, there are a few things that we want to do including visiting Sorrento itself including a cathedral and some beautiful piazzas as well as a beautiful valley. Another day I really want to drive to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Thing 1 is obsessed with volcanoes so I’m thinking that will go down well with him. If we have time I would love to do see the Amalfi Coast, go to Capri and do an open bus tour in Sorrento if we are looking for things to do. I don’t want to take too much time away from the beach / pool though – its a week for relaxing!

Lake Como

From Sorrento we drive to Naples and fly to Milan where we are meeting my mum and driving to Lake Como.

We have a gorgeous apartment on the lake with a lido 100 metres away. There is loads to do around the lake and over the border in Switzerland: Funiculars by the side of the lake, boats on the lake, water parks, lakeside villages and chocolate factories are all on offer.

I’m loving Scribe and Spoon’s review of Lake Como and Expat With Kids advice for things to do in Lugano. We will definitely take some of their advice including the water trampoline, which sounds like so much fun!

Sicily

The last leg sees us driving back to Milan and fly to Sicily to meet up with some very dear friends. With 2 Things per family (6 total) I anticipate all levels of chaos and fun rolled into one.

We have a lovely villa with a pool and we will be near the beach. I already have visions of chilled evenings outside sipping wine and throwing meat on a BBQ…. Bliss! We have an option of a private chef one evening, which sounds brilliant.

There is loads to do on Sicily although much of it is on the opposite side of the island. I would love to see Mount Etna and the Valle dei Templi but we will see how much car time we can face. With 6 kids in town we will need to keep them from getting bored (I’m hoping they might entertain themselves?!). I found The Thinking Traveller has some great ideas, which I hope we will try out.

Fun fun fun in Italy!

So there we have it. We have been planning this holiday for so long that I am sure we will have terrible holiday blues. In the meantime, I’m excited for what the next 3 weeks will bring.
